PMS is real. If you’ve ever felt like a totally different person the week before your period—moody, bloated, anxious, exhausted, crampy—you are not crazy and you are not alone. Hormones are powerful messengers, and when they’re out of balance, our bodies and emotions feel it.
As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (and someone who has walked through this personally), I want to share gentle, realistic ways to support your body during PMS so you can move through this phase with more grace, nourishment, and compassion.
1. Eat for Blood Sugar Balance
During the luteal phase (the week or two before your period), your body is more sensitive to blood sugar swings. Crashes can worsen cravings, irritability, fatigue, and anxiety.
Focus on:
Protein + healthy fats at every meal
Slow-burning carbs like sweet potatoes, fruit, and sourdough
Eating regularly and not skipping meals
Stabilizing blood sugar is one of the most impactful things you can do for PMS.
2. Support Your Liver + Elimination
Your liver plays a major role in clearing excess estrogen. When estrogen isn’t detoxed efficiently, PMS symptoms can intensify.
Support your liver by:
Drinking lemon water or dandelion root tea
Using castor oil packs a few nights per week
Ensuring you’re having daily bowel movements
Adding Bioray Liver Life, a gentle herbal blend that supports healthy liver detox pathways
Bonus supports include raw carrot salads and fermented foods like beet kvass.
3. Magnesium for Cramps, Mood & Sleep
Magnesium is one of the most commonly deficient minerals and can be incredibly supportive during PMS. Try:
Magnesium glycinate before bed
Epsom salt baths
Magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, avocado, and pumpkin seeds
Many women notice less cramping, better sleep, and calmer moods with consistent magnesium support.
4. Herbal Support for the Cycle
Herbs can be powerful allies during PMS when used intentionally.
Some favorites:
Subluna Moontime Herbal Tincture and Vitex/ Chaste Berry Tincture– supports cramps, mood, and overall cycle balance
Healthy Cycle Tea by Traditional Medicinals – a gentle daily tea to support a healthy menstrual cycle
Chamomile + raspberry leaf – calming and mineral-rich
Ashwagandha – helps calm the nervous system
Always work with a practitioner when introducing herbs, especially if you’re new to them.
5. Vitamin E Support (Timing Matters)
Vitamin E can be incredibly supportive for PMS, especially for breast tenderness and hormone balance.
Take Vitamin E regularly
Increase consistency every day the week leading up to your period and during your period
This timing helps support healthy inflammatory response and estrogen balance when your body needs it most.
6. Skip Caffeine & Alcohol During Luteal + Menstrual Phases
Caffeine and alcohol can significantly worsen PMS symptoms by:
Increasing anxiety and irritability
Spiking blood sugar
Burdening the liver
Intensifying cramps and breast tenderness
If possible, avoid both during your luteal and menstrual phases and opt for herbal teas, mineral-rich drinks, or warm nourishing beverages instead.
7. Rest, Slow Down & Reduce Stress
Your body is doing important work during this phase. You are not lazy—you are cyclical.
Support yourself by:
Saying no to unnecessary commitments
Going to bed earlier
Choosing gentle movement like walking, stretching, or Pilates
Rest is productive during this time.
8. Pray Through It
Hormonal shifts often bring emotions to the surface. Instead of fighting it, allow this phase to be a time of reflection.
Pray, journal, and invite God into your discomfort. Ask Him to help you release what no longer serves you and to remind you that your body is not broken—it’s communicating.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to do all of this at once. Healing is not about perfection—it’s about listening, supporting, and responding with compassion.
Pray about what feels right for your body in this season and start with one or two small steps. Hormonal health is a journey, and every gentle choice matters.
You were designed with wisdom and intention. Honor your cycle.
